About “Kimiyo”: 

The whole project was initially perceived as an instrumental one by Lemelin, Foster only being able to whisper when the idea was brought up, but the latter rather had the idea of inviting Momoka with whom he had worked on several occasions – dating back to his tenure with Your Favorite Enemies – to be the voice of the first incarnation of his project. Little did she know she would become the focal point of what would become the album titled Kimiyo, which became a catalyst for what would follow afterward.

“I have always been looking for a pretext or an excuse to work with Momoka. She’s got a very unique type of spirit and she’s a very inspiring and insightful person. We have a common view about life in general and spirituality in particular, but most of all, she is a fantastic artist for whom I have the utmost admiration. When it became obvious to me that I would be in no way capable of singing or speaking on the songs we had sketched, Momoka was the only person able to transcend the project’s spirit in my opinion.

The poetry of Kimiyo was to be the core holding the whole project together, but I wanted Momoka to make her own interpretation of the lyrical undercurrent and to express herself in her native tongue, so she wouldn’t have to be my voice nor try to emulate what my words might convey. We set the canvas, laid down the color palettes, but it was for her to express herself and be the painting.”

Foreseen as a story within a story, Kimiyo bloomed into a multi-layered entity, the album is inspired by the testimonies of the people Alex Henry Foster met in Japan back in 2010. Kimiyo’s main narrative focuses on the journey of a young person who wrote to Alex Henry Foster years after their encounter to share pieces of her journey about how she found a new sense of self.

After thinking of taking her life upon becoming unwillingly pregnant, but unable to fathom the idea of ending her life or her pregnancy, she became hateful towards the burgeoning existence slowly taking over her body, but found a fulfilling form of hope for her present and future self emerging from feeling the baby starting to move inside of her body.

She then envisioned a life of her own, a purpose she had never imagined being able to find anywhere – especially not within herself – but lost the child following a miscarriage, leaving her empty again, but somehow transformed. She had learned that happiness is a measure of the heart and soul, accepting that purpose is something that grows from within, but, as Alex Henry Foster exposed it, while the tree might too often hide the beautiful density of a forest, there are lights that are simply way too bright to be hidden.

À propos de “Kimiyo” :

Le projet en entier était initialement perçu par Lemelin comme étant un projet instrumental, Foster étant seulement en mesure de murmurer lorsqu’il en partagea l’idée, mais ce dernier eu plutôt l’idée d’inviter Momoka avec qui il avait travaillé à de nombreuses occasions – datant de l’époque de son implication au sein de Your Favorite Enemies – afin d’être la voix de la toute première incarnation de son projet. Elle ne savait pas qu'elle deviendrait le point central de ce qui serait l'album intitulé Kimiyo, qui est devenu un catalyseur pour ce qui allait suivre.

« J’ai toujours cherché un prétexte ou une excuse pour travailler avec Momoka. Elle a un esprit des plus uniques et elle est une personne très inspirante et intuitive. Nous avons une vision commune de la vie en général et de la spiritualité en particulier, mais surtout, elle est une artiste fantastique envers qui j’ai la plus haute des admirations. Lorsqu’il est devenu clair pour moi qu’il me serait impossible de chanter ou parler sur les chansons dont nous avions fait les esquisses, Momoka deviendrait la seule personne habile à transcender l’esprit du projet, selon moi.

La poésie de Voyage à la Mer deviendrait l’élément central sur lequel le projet trouverait son appui, mais je voulais que Momoka puisse faire sa propre interprétation du courant lyrique sous-jacent et s’exprimer dans sa langue natale, afin qu’elle n’ait pas à incarner ma voix ni à tenter d’imiter ce que mes mots tenteraient de communiquer. Nous avons posé la toile, défini l’ensemble des couleurs, mais c'était à elle de s'exprimer et d'être le tableau. »

Conçu comme étant une histoire dans une histoire, Kimiyo s'est développé en une entité à plusieurs niveaux, l’album étant inspiré de témoignages de gens dont Foster avait fait la rencontre au Japon en 2010. Le récit principal de Kimiyo met l’emphase sur le parcours d’une jeune personne qui écrivit à Foster des années suivant leur rencontre afin d’en partager des bribes de la façon dont elle avait trouvé un nouveau sens de soi.

Après avoir pensé s’enlever la vie des suites d’une grossesse non désirée, mais incapable d’envisager l’idée de mettre fin à sa vie ou à sa grossesse, elle devint ainsi haineuse envers la vie qui bourgeonnait en elle et prenait possession de son corps, mais trouva une forme d’espoir l’apaisant face à son état présent et futur qui émergea en sentant le bébé commencer à bouger dans son corps.

Elle s’est alors mise à s’imaginer une vie bien à elle, un but qu’elle n’aurait jamais pensé être en mesure de trouver nul part – tout particulièrement pas à l’intérieur d’elle-même – mais a perdu l’enfant des suites d’une fausse couche, la laissant vide à nouveau, mais en quelque sorte transformée. Elle apprit que le bonheur est une mesure du coeur et de l’âme, acceptant que le sentiment de but est quelque chose qui croît de l’intérieur, mais, comme Foster l’a exposé, tout comme l’arbre peut trop souvent cacher la magnifique densité d’une forêt, il existe des lumières qui sont tout simplement trop lumineuses pour être cachées.
